ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Two first-half goals by Elmira College field hockey were not enough for EC to earn its first Empire 8 Conference win of the 2017 season, as the Soaring Eagles fell to Hartwick College by a 3-2 final score on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, New York.
The Hawks opened the scoring in today's contest, as an Allyson Quirk cross shot got past Elmira keeper
Tina O'Donnell '20 which gave the home team a 1-0 lead just 1:50 into the contest.
Despite the early tally, O'Donnell's confidence did not waver, as she made a pair of saves in the next 15 minutes to help keep the deficit at just 1-0.
The Purple and Gold offense started to heat up around the 14th minute, as they recorded three shots in a two-minute span. The final of which came off of the stick of
Emily Selbert '20 and flew past the Hawks' keeper Allyson Osborne to knot the score at 1-all at the 16:03 mark.
Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 was credited with an assist on the play.
Elmira would strike again a little over five minutes later when
Janie Kempf '21 was able to force a shot through a scrum in front of the home team's cage, which gave EC a 2-1 lead in the bout.
This advantage would be short-lived, however, as Hartwick knotted the score at 2-all just 23 seconds later. With O'Donnell out of the cage to try and stop the initial shot, Bella Wheeler faced a wide-open net and buried her shot to tie the score up at the 21:38 mark.
The Hawks remained aggressive throughout the remained of the first half, as they dominated time of possession for the final 15 minutes. Despite the pressure, EC held strong and took the 2-2 tie into the halftime break.
Hartwick continued to attack at the start of the second half, as it recorded five shots in the first 10 minutes of the half. This pressure finally got through the Purple and Gold defense at the 47:22 mark, when Julia Butts scored the eventual game winner. Butts was a recipient of a beautiful pass from Marissa Downes in front of the EC cage, which allowed her to take an easy shot that gave the Hawks the decisive 3-2 advantage.
The Soaring Eagles were unable to get any real offense going in the second half, as they had to settle for zero shot attempts in the final 30 minutes. Unable to mount a comeback attempt, Elmira was resigned to take the 3-2 E8 loss.
