NORTHFIELD, Vt. --
For just the second time this season, the nationally-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team tasted defeat, as the Soaring Eagles were shutout in the East-West Hockey Classic title game by No. 2/3-ranked Plattsburgh State, 3-0, on Monday at Norwich University's Kreitzberg Arena.

Plattsburgh, the four-time defending Division III national champion, got revenge for a 4-2 loss that it suffered against the Soaring Eagles on November 26 in the championship game of the Cardinals' home tournament, the UNO Classic. Although the feathered foes no longer meet biannually as conference opponents, hockey fans were treated to not just one, but two previews of what could be a postseason rubber match in this year's NCAA tournament.

Elmira, which was crowned the No. 1 team in the country in the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) national poll earlier today, was blanked for the first time this season despite owning a 31-to-21 advantage in shots on goal. The EC offense was also awarded six power-play opportunities, but failed to capitalize with an extra skater on the ice. The Cardinals scored twice in the latter stages of the first period, with both goals coming off the stick of Courtney Moriarty, who was crowned the East-West Hockey Classic Most Valuable Player at the conclusion of the contest. Kayla Meneghin added a power-play goal five minutes into the third period to complete the day's scoring.

EC goalie Kelcey Crawford '18 finished with 18 saves, giving the senior from Purcellville, Virginia, a combined 40 in the two tournament games against a pair of ranked opponents. Earning bids on the East-West Hockey Classic All-Tournament team were forwards Katie Granato '19 and Devyn Gilman '21, who recorded multi-point outings in Sunday's 5-1 victory over then-No. 4/4 Adrian College in the first round.
