Stevens Secures Neutral-Site Victory vs. Elmira College Field Hockey

Score: Stevens Institute of Technology 7, Elmira College 0
Records: Elmira (6-9, 1-5 E8), Stevens (10-6, 5-2 E8)
Location: Growney Stadium -- Rochester, N.Y.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- In a neutral-site contest at St. John Fisher College's Growney Stadium, the Elmira College field hockey team dropped a 7-0 Empire 8 Conference decision to Stevens Institute of Technology.

Forced to compete with only 10 players due to injury, the Soaring Eagles did their best to withstand the storm from the Stevens offense. The Ducks finished with an advantage in both shots (41-to-6) and penalty corners (18-to-2). They scored 1:50 into the contest to take the lead, before adding back-to-back tallies in a span of 48 seconds in the 11th minute.

Down 3-0, the Purple and Gold managed to hold the Ducks scoreless for nearly 36:49, thanks to junior goalkeeper Tina O'Donnell '20. O'Donnell made eight of her 18 saves in that span to deny Stevens, but the Ducks ended the drought in the 48th minute when Allison Buffenbarger converted on a penalty stroke.

Despite the disparity in the offensive totals, the Soaring Eagles' counter-attack produced a handful of promising runs. Forwards Janie Kempf '21 and Kaylee Gill '22 were able to carry the ball deep into the offensive zone on several occasions, one resulting in a penalty corner in the 28th minute. Kempf took a mighty swing after receiving the entry pass, but her shot sailed wide. With four minutes remaining, Elmira earned another scoring opportunity with a penalty corner. This time Emily Selbert '20 was able to forward the ball from the top of the arc to Gill by the right post, but alas, Gill's the deflection missed its mark.

  • Freshman Kristen Tull '22 earned her team-leading fourth defensive save of the year.
  • Kempf took a team-high five shots but saw her three-game point streak come to an end.
  • O'Donnell moved into a two-way tie for third-place in EC single-season history with 189 saves on the season, equaling the 2007 total from Jalene McCulloch '10, the program's all-time leader in career saves.
