BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Despite highly-competitive play throughout the entirety of the match, a penalty kick in the 26th minute would determine tonight's winner, as the Elmira College men's soccer team fell short on the road to Medaille College, 1-0.
The Soaring Eagles were whistled for an infraction at the 25:31 mark of the opening half, which sent Medaille's Levi Bojang to penalty dot just 12-yards out. Bojang capitalized on the opportunity and scored the game's only goal to hand the Mavericks a well-earned one-goal victory.
Medaille held a decisive edge in shots, 16-3, but EC's back line once again forced most of those attempts to sail wide or high, as the Mavericks owned a slim 4-2 lead in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a slight lead in corner-kick chances, 5-1.
Although the discrepancy in shots were wide, Elmira was the first to place a shot on goal, as
Nicholas Zanger '22 rocketed one on frame in the 6th minute of action. However, Medaille's Jonny Pitts was in position to make the save and keep EC off of the scoreboard. Elmira's other shot of the first half came from
Michael Courtney '21, who saw his attempt skim over the crossbar in the 35th minute.
The final shot attempt of the night by the Purple and Gold came from the boot of
Haden Smith '22, who nearly equalized in the 88th minute, but once again Medaille's Pitts came up with another crucial save to solidify the win for the Mavericks.
EC's Giovanni Garfui '22 got the starting nod in net, his team-leading 12th start of the season, and made three saves in 90 minutes of action.
In His Own Words...
"Very proud of the guys tonight, outside a slow start and the refs decision to award Medaolle a PK in the first half - which proved to be the difference," said head coach Kevin Brenner. "I thought we played our best game to date against a very good 2017 NCAA team. We dictated the second half of play and were the better team. We are looking forward to hosting Utica this weekend in a very pivotal E8 contest on Campus Field. I encourage everyone to come out and support this great group of men."
