BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team erased a one-goal deficit to secure its third victory of the season, as the Purple and Gold rallied for a 2-1 comeback win over Medaille College on Tuesday night.
Medaille took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute thanks to a game-opening goal by Kristen Kline, her first of the season, on an assist from Emma Campagna. However, an undisciplined foul by the Mavericks inside the 18-yard box created a penalty-kick opportunity for the Soaring Eagles and setup the game-tying goal.
With a penalty kick awarded, head coach
Kaitlyn Mallernee sent second-year midfielder
Lily Kronick '21 to the 12-yard mark. Kronick showed nerves of steel and routinely buried the penalty kick to equalize the game at 1-1 in the 43rd minute. The tally was her third of the season.
In the second half, the Soaring Eagles faced a barrage of shots in the opening 20 minutes, but the Elmira back line forced several of the attempts to miss their target and keep the score knotted at 1-1.
In the later stages of the second stanza, Elmira was able to breakthrough for the game-winning score behind the heroics of second-year talent
Zoya Katta '21. After receiving a pass from
Jennifer Flynn '20, Katta was able to beat Medaille's Melyssa Olmstead for the eventual game-winning strike in the 77th minute.
Elmira's defense closed out the game by limiting the Mavericks to just two shots in the closing 13 minutes, forcing one to sail wide right and blocking the other, which all but sealed an inspiring 2-1 come-from-behind victory for the Purple and Gold.
Freshman goalkeeper
Cassidy Buchman '22 came up with three saves, two in the first half and one in the second stanza, en route to her first collegiate victory.
EC ended tonight's contest with a 14-12 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Medaille owned a 6-2 edge in corner-kick chances.
In Her Own Words...
"It feels great to get a win on the road, especially with all of our current obstacles," said Mallernee. "We had a lot going against us today: players pushing through sickness, injuries, and only one sub. We truly came together and worked as a unit today. We pride ourselves on family, and that showed. We were able to equalize just before half, giving us momentum when we came out for the second half. We played with intensity and urgency going into the final third, creating more offensive options. I'm happy that we were able to capitalize on the little things we have been working on, especially our communication and movement with the ball. I'm excited to see us playing together."
