ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Spurred on by 16 service aces, the Elmira College women's volleyball team rolled to a straight-set victory over the visiting Wildcats of Penn College on Tuesday evening.
The Soaring Eagles dictated the flow of match from the service line, as Penn College mustered only four aces compared to EC's 16. Offensively,
Savannah Terry '21 and
Natalie Schieder '19 led the Purple and Gold with seven kills apiece.
Taylor Kaznowski '19 orchestrated Elmira's offense to perfection, racking up a match-high 25 assists.
The Purple and Gold dominated the first set, using a 16-2 run to jump out to a massive early lead. Schieder highlighted the opening barrage with a string of four-straight aces.
Tiara John '19 wrapped up the run with the second of her four kills. Elmira held its commanding lead from there as
Karina Hastings '19 and Kaznowski tallied back-to-back kills to officially put the set out of reach at 21-10, before claiming a 25-11 victory in the opener.
EC slipped behind early in the second set as Penn College seized an 8-4 lead. The Soaring Eagles used a 5-0 run, punctuated by back-to-back kills from
Lydia Milligan '21, to knot the score at 9-9. The score continued to swing back-and-forth from there before EC finally reclaimed the lead at 22-21 on the heels of a service ace from
Cassie Potter '20. The Purple and Gold cruised from there, as
Sabrina Didas '20 and Terry floored back-to-back kills to bring an emphatic end to the set at 25-22.
Both sides traded blows to start the final set. With the score deadlocked at 12-12,
Kasey Campbell '19 broke the stalemate from the service line with an ace. The Wildcats were able to hang around and knotted the score at 19-19, but a kill from Schieder put the Purple and Gold up for good. Schieder rounded out her stellar-set with a pair of aces to seal the 25-20 victory.
In her own words…
"It was a good team effort tonight," said head coach
