WILLIAMSTON, Mass. -- The No. 3/3-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team erased a two-goal second-period deficit, but EC's rally fell short as the Ephs of Williams College handed the Soaring Eagles a 4-2 non-league setback on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Williams took the first lead of the game just 2:58 into the second stanza on a goal from Amanda Reisman. Meghan Holloran doubled the Ephs' lead just about 14 minutes later at 16:56 with a power-play tally. Abby Brustad picked up assists on both goals, while Annie Rush added a helper on the second goal.
Trailing 2-0, EC's leading scorer
Katie Granato '19 trimmed Williams' lead to just one with a goal at 17:53 in the second period. The scoring play was set up by
Meg Lahey '19 and
Jenny Heath '22, who were both credited with assists.
The Granato goal was a sign of things to come though, as the senior forward delivered another timely goal for the Soaring Eagles midway through the third period. On the power play, Granato scored her sixth extra-skater goal of the season and her 13th overall to knot the score at 2-2 with 11:06 remaining in the contest.
Kiana Melvin '20 and
Shannon Strawinski '19 picked up assists on the game-tying goal.
Elmira seemed to the have the momentum moving forward, but Williams' Rush delivered an even-strength goal with 1:50 left on the clock to reclaim a 3-2 lead. The Soaring Eagles pulled starting goalie
Elizabeth Hanson '21 from the net in hopes of leveling the contest, but instead Halloran scored her second goal of the game to seal a 4-2 win for Williams.
