The No. 3/3 nationally-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team ended its United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) bout against William Smith College today with a 2-2 overtime draw after allowing two goals in the third period.

Meghan Fonfara '18 opened today's scoring with a power-play strike 7:01 into the contest. Fonfara was set on the Herons' starting goalie's glove side, Maggie Salmon, when she gathered a pass from Katie Granato '19 and shot the puck between Salmon's legs. Freshman Devyn Gilman '21 earned the secondary assist on the play.

Granato widened EC's lead with her 17th goal of the season at the 3:32 mark of the second period. The tally was set up by a cross-ice pass from the right side of the ice from Maddie Evangelous '19 that deflected off Fonfara's stick straight to Granato, who found the inside corner of the net.

The Herons' comeback started just 49 seconds into the third period, as Stephanie Hampton scored an unassisted tally. Hampton took advantage of some confusion in front of the Elmira goal, as a loose puck glided straight to her stick then into the back of the net.

It took William Smith about nine minutes to find the equalizer off the stick of Taylor Morash at the 9:28 mark of the third. The Herons' second tally was very similar to the first, as a Kelcey Crawford '18 save of a shot by Kiley Fewster slid slowly across the front of the net until Morash helped it across the line.

Crawford was solid for much of the game, as she made 23 saves. However, in the third period, William Smith was able to get to her with added pressure.

Another key factor in today's contest was Elmira's 1-for-6 performance on the power play. Coming into this weekend, EC led the UCHC with a 27.4 percent effectiveness on the extra-skater opportunity.
