PINE VALLEY, N.Y. --
The Elmira College women's tennis team closed the books on the 2017-18 season on the short end of a 9-0 decision against SUNY Oneonta Tuesday evening at the Murray Athletic Center.

For just the second time in 14 matches this season, the Soaring Eagles were unable to take a match away from their opponent. EC finished the year with a 2-12 overall record, while the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta improved to 12-3.

The Red Dragons came out victorious in all three doubles matches to begin the non-conference match. Despite an 8-4 loss at the No. 1 spot, EC's top tandem of Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Katy Jewett '21 put up quite the fight against Alyssa Brault and Julieta Eulau. Down 6-1 early, the Soaring Eagles showed some resiliency by winning three of the next four games to come within three games, 7-4. Although Fitzgerald and Jewett were able to swing the momentum in their favor momentarily, the early deficit would be too large for the teammates to overcome.

In singles competition, Fitzgerald was bested in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, by Brault – a former Division II transfer who claimed First-Team All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) accolades in the fall.

In one of the most exciting matches of the evening, freshman Eliza Johnson '21 went toe-to-toe with Oneonta junior Michelle Halpern at third singles. Halpern took the opening set by a narrow 6-4 score, but Johnson rallied to win a second-set tiebreak, 7-6 (5). In the super tiebreaker, Halpern outlasted the Elmira rookie, 10-6, to claim the victory.
