HOBOKEN, N.J. -- A six-run fifth inning doomed the Elmira College baseball team in Wednesday's midweek matchup against Stevens Institute of Technology, as the host Ducks overcame an early deficit and held on late for a 9-4 Empire 8 Conference win.
The Soaring Eagles were outhit 14-to-6 but exhibited tremendous patience at the plate to earn a season-high 11 walks. Those bases on balls helped Elmira score one run in the second, third and fourth innings. In the top of the second inning down 1-0, two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for EC.
Joey Florio '20 then grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in the tying run. The Soaring Eagles nearly added a second run in the frame, but
Tommy Fogarty '20 was tagged out at the dish when he tried to score on a wild pitch thrown by Stevens starter Chandler Brierley.
Brierley's day ended in the top of the third, as he once against loaded the bases with three walks and plunked Fogarty for the second consecutive plate appearance to drive in the go-ahead run. A
Bryce Plante '18 RBI groundout in the fourth made it a 3-1 score in favor of Elmira, but the margin wasn't large enough to outlast the home half of the fifth.
Lefty
Noah Gulino '19 took the mound with a two-run lead in relief of
Nick Sampogna '18, who twirled 4.0 innings of one-run ball in his second appearance of the year. Gulino needed just five pitches to induce back-to-back ground balls, but with two outs, the Ducks smacked seven consecutive hits and scored six runs off of the southpaw pitcher. Just like that, Elmira's 3-1 advantage vanished and turned into a 7-3 deficit.
The Soaring Eagles had a prime opportunity to strike back in the seventh. Pinch-hitter
Jansen Crossley '20 was dealt a full-count walk, moved up to third on a failed pick-off and scored on a Fogarty base knock. However, with a pair of runners on base, Florio was caught looking at strike three, and Fogarty was tagged out in a rundown between second and third in the ensuing at-bat to end the inning.
Although the Ducks tacked on two more runs in the eighth, walks nearly sparked an Elmira rally. In the top of the ninth, Crossley and
Jack Volpe '20 were each issued a base on balls, which were sandwiched around a Fogarty line-drive base hit. Alas, the bases were left full, as Stevens reliever Drew Hanke picked up the save by fanning the final two batters to end the game.
