WEEHAWKEN, N.J. -- The Elmira College softball team was held scoreless in both ends of its Empire 8 Conference-opening doubleheader against the Stevens Institute of Technology today in Weehawken, New Jersey. The Soaring Eagles suffered 5-0 and 8-0 losses to the Ducks at the Weehawken Waterfront Park.
McKenzie Slaven '20 was given the start for EC in game one. The local product from Horseheads, New York, pitched all 6.0 innings and allowed five runs, four of which were earned, to go along with four strikeouts. Slaven went 5.2 innings without giving up an earned run, but the persistent Ducks plated two in both the fifth and sixth innings to seal the victory.
The Soaring Eagles' best scoring chance came in the top of the third inning, when EC put two on base with two outs.
Allie Krohn '20 and
Maddy Johnson '19 hit back-to-back singles to give
Hannah Lundgren '18 a prime chance to tie the score. Unfortunately for Elmira, Stevens' starting pitcher Christine LaRochelle halted EC's scoring chance by striking out Lundgren on four pitches.
Similar to the opening game, the Soaring Eagles struggled to get their bats going in the second contest of the doubleheader. The Purple and Gold were held to just two hits in the five-inning bout. Johnson singled in the fourth inning to extend her hit streak to five consecutive games to start the year, while
Carolyn Corcoran '19 hammered a double in the fifth frame to round out EC's hits.
The Ducks got to
Katie McDougal '18, EC's starting pitcher, early in the second contest by putting four runs on the board in the first 2.0 innings. All four of Stevens' second-inning runs were unearned, as Elmira started the frame with two consecutive fielding errors. A run in the third and three more in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Madison Gemma, sealed the 8-0 victory for Stevens. McDougal pitched all 4.0 innings for the Soaring Eagles and allowed eight runs, four of which were earned.
