ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team was unable to pull off a second-half comeback against The Sage Colleges on Saturday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles fell to the Gators by a 14-10 final score in Empire 8 conference action at nearby Ernie Davis Academy in Elmira, New York.
Senior
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 played arguably her best game as a Soaring Eagle, as she tallied a career-high four points (2g-2a). The native of East Sussex, England, was a key component of the comeback attempt, as she scored twice in the final five minutes of the second half. Fellow senior
Sarah Hughson '18 was in charge on the defensive end, as she led all players with a career-high 11 caused turnovers and six ground balls. Hughson also found the back of the net a career-high-tying three times to finish second on the team.
The contest started in Elmira's favor, as goals by Hughson,
Macy Huntley '19 and
Danielle Goddard '20 gave the home team a 3-1 lead more than three minutes into the game. The Gators answered by scoring six of the next seven goals to take a 7-4 advantage into the halftime break.
At the start of the second stanza, Sage scored three more unanswered goals to take a commanding 10-4 advantage. A 2-0 run by EC helped stop the momentum for a bit, but a 3-0 surge by the Gators expanding the margin back to six goals, 13-7.
The Purple and Gold would not go down without a fight, however, as they strung together four-straight tallies to come within three goals, 13-10, with 3:35 remaining in regulation.
Rachael Goetz '20 scored the first goal of the run on a free-position attempt, before a tally by Hughson and the aforementioned pair of goals by Durnell capped off the comeback. It would prove not to be enough, however, as Sage scored one more time as time expired to seal a 14-10 conference triumph.
Freshman
Kacie Pierce '21 made the start for the Soaring Eagles and recorded nine saves in her 60 minutes of action.
