ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's lacrosse team brought an end to the 2018 campaign today with a 21-5 Empire 8 Conference loss to St. John Fisher College at Campus Field. The bout served as the Soaring Eagles' Class of 2018 Recognition Day, as it would be the final collegiate game for the team's four seniors.
After being honored in a pregame ceremony,
Nevin Olney '18,
Colby Runk '18 and
Jacob Magnoli '18 all scored goals in their final games donning the Purple and Gold. Fellow senior
Jeff Ahlgrim '18 started on defense. Olney led the way for the Soaring Eagles with a pair of goals in the bout, while both Runk and Magnoli found the back of the net once.
Kevin DiMagno '20 rounded EC's goal scorers with his eleventh of the season.
On defense, freshman
Jacob Mattice '21 was busy all day, as he made a whopping 18 saves in 41:43 minutes of action.
Cam Brickey '19 also did his part on defense, as he led the Soaring Eagles in both ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (3).
One of the biggest contributors to today's result was the difference in faceoffs won. Fisher owned a 22-to-6 advantage at the draw, which resulted in the Cardinals owning a 53-28 lead in shots. EC also did not do itself any favors with penalties, as they gave the visitors seven extra-man opportunities, three of which were cashed in on.
Elmira opened the contest's scoring just two minutes into the first quarter. Runk scored the unassisted tally by dodging a pair of defenders and beating the goalie high. The Cardinals answered by scoring the final six goals of the quarter to take a 6-1 lead into the second period.
Four more goals by the Cardinals to start the second widened Fisher's lead to 10-1. EC responded with back-to-back goals by Olney and Magnoli over the next minute and a half. Olney scored first with a shot directly following a faceoff. The loose ball rolled to the senior, which he then buried into the back of the net. Magnoli's tally came off of a clear when he caught the ball from just outside the box and beat a defender to bounce in the goal.
Unfortunately for EC, the Cardinals scored the next seven goals over the end of the second and start of the third quarter to take a 17-3 lead that EC could not answer. Fisher ended the game with four more goals to secure a 21-5 triumph.
Olney and DiMagno combined to score Elmira's last two goals of the day. Olney's came at the 8:34 mark of the third period, when he began behind the net and spun around a defender to beat the goalie through his legs. DiMagno scored with 13:26 left in the contest, when he just ran past his defender to put the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal.
