BUFFALO N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's soccer team came up short in this evening's season opener, as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision in the opening round of the Buffalo State Fred Hartrick Classic to the host Bengals.
Buffalo State set the tone early in tonight's tilt, as Theo Pencic found the back of the net just 1:53 into regulation. Elmira settled into the game after the initial strike, but Buffalo State's Zakaria Shaibi eventually doubled the Bengal lead with a tally in the 34th minute.
Following the goal from Shaibi, Elmira had possibly its best scoring chance of the opening half in the 38th minute when the Soaring Eagles were awarded a corner kick. Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, the set piece did not produce a score as EC entered the halftime break with a 2-0 deficit.
Nearly 15 minutes passed in the second half until the Bengals padded their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Nemanja Simic in the 61st minute.
With the game coming to a close, rookie
David Rojas '22 powered a header on target with just 13 seconds left in regulation. The aerial attempt rattled off the woodwork though, as time expired shortly after and Buffalo State marched away with a 3-0 victory.
