Men’s Soccer Second-Half Woes Leads to Non-Conference Setback to Brockport

Score: The College at Brockport 4, Elmira College 0
Records: Brockport (5-2), Elmira (1-6)
Location: Bob Boozer Field – Brockport, N.Y.

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- A strong first-half performance by the Elmira College men's soccer team could not be duplicated in the second half of tonight's non-conference bout, as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 4-0 decision to the Golden Eagles of The College at Brockport.

Brockport held a distinct advantage in shots, 25-6, as well as in shots on goal, 15-3. Corner-kick opportunities were also in favor of the Golden Eagles at 9-4, however, Elmira produced all four corner kicks in the second stanza.

Second-year goalkeeper Jacob Mattice '21 got the start between the sticks this evening, his first start of the 2018 campaign and first since the 2017 season finale on October 27, 2017. Mattice finished the night with a career-high 11 saves, including a 10-save effort in the first 45 minutes of action. Six of Mattice's 10 first-half saves occurred in the opening 21 minutes of regulation.

John Broyles '19 produced Elmira's lone shot on goal of the first half at the 44:28 mark, while Rodney Smith '19 logged a pair of shots on goal in the second stanza, both of which came on headers.

Brockport's Jeff Hibbard broke the 0-0 stalemate just 2:19 into the second half with what eventually held up as tonight's game-winning goal. AJ Sinclair and Zach Langelotti added goals less than three minutes apart in the 61st and 64th minutes, respectively, while Alex Giordano capped the night with a tally with just 18 seconds left on the game clock.

In His Own Words…
"I thought today was a tale of two halves," said head coach Kevin Brenner. "The first stanza we played very well defensively, keeping a dangerous Brockport team off of the scoreboard. However, in the second half, we did not come out with the same focus and attention to detail, and a good team like Brockport made us pay. We continue to grow with this young group of seven-to-eight freshmen in the starting 11."

News and Notes
  • Anthony Esce Jr. '22 made his first collegiate start.
  • Mattice made his first start of the year and logged his second appearance of the season.
  • Mattice's 11 saves are a career-high for the second-year goalkeeper.
  • The 11 saves by Mattice are also a season high for any EC netminder.
