ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Heavy rainfall in the Southern Tier did not hinder Wednesday night's non-league match between Elmira College men's soccer and SUNY Delhi, as the two squads squared off underneath the flood lights at Notre Dame High School's turf field. Unfortunately for the Elmira men, the Broncos of SUNY Delhi escaped a fiery second-half performance by the Purple and Gold for a 3-0 victory.
The Broncos cashed in on their first opportunity of the evening, as Brody Rettle connected on a strike from the top of the 18-yard box in the 10th minute. Alhasane Sako, who was credited with an assist, setup the scoring play with a well-placed through ball.
Despite the one-goal deficit, Elmira had a handful of quality scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes. However, EC struggled with its shooting accuracy, as all five of the team's first-half shots missed the target. As a result, SUNY Delhi entered the halftime break with a 1-0 lead in large part due to an 8-5 advantage in shots, including a 5-0 lead in shots on goal.
The second stanza was more balanced in terms of shots, as both teams fired five shots apiece. Three of Elmira's second-half attempts made their way on target, but Delhi's Marcos Andrino snuffed out all three to keep the Soaring Eagles scoreless.
The Broncos, on the other hand, scored twice on their five shots to secure the team's fifth win of the season. Matthew Cassidy tallied Delhi's second goal of the night on a free kick in the 62nd minute, while Jason Morquecho tallied the third goal of the evening on a counter-attack in the 85th minute. Ryan Hickey was credited with an assist on the Morquecho tally.
