Field Hockey Defeated On The Road By Scranton, 4-0

Score: University of Scranton 4, Elmira College 0
Records: Elmira (1-3), Scranton (3-0)
Location: Scranton, Pa. -- Weiss Field

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elmira College field hockey team was unable to end the University of Scranton's undefeated start to the 2018 season, as the Royals handed the Soaring Eagles a 4-0 setback at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals took an early lead on a sixth-minute goal from Gracie McClatchy. However, the Soaring Eagles looked to respond in the 12th minute by generating some offense on Scranton's half of the field. Kelsie Aloi '21 and Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 fired back-to-back shots in a span of 33 seconds, but Royals keeper Jenna Cyr saved the first, and the second attempt sailed wide of its target. Less than a minute later, the Purple and Gold were awarded a penalty corner, but they were unable to record a shot on the play.

Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, that was as close as they would come to scoring against tough Scranton defense. EC was unable to release another shot or earn any additional penalty corners for the remainder of the contest.

Tina O'Donnell '20 continued her strong performance in the cage for Elmira. The junior finished one shy of her single-game career-high by logging 21 saves while playing all 70:00 minutes between the posts. O'Donnell has double-digit saves in all four games to start the 2018 campaign and leads the Empire 8 Conference with 17.00 saves per game.

News and Notes
  • Elmira falls to 1-3 overall, while Scranton improved to 3-0 with the non-conference win.
  • Freshman defender Kristen Tull '22 made her first career defensive save for EC.
  • O'Donnell made a season-high 21 saves, finishing just one stop shy of her career high of 22 saves, which she made in a start against Scranton last season.
  • O'Donnell remains first in the E8 in saves (68) and saves per game (17.00).
