ITHACA, N.Y. --The Elmira College women's soccer team battled former Empire 8 foe Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles launched a valiant effort against their Route 13 rivals, but the Bombers were able to stifle Elmira's offense en route to the victory.
Ithaca struck first, as Alex Epifani was able to beat starting netminder
Meghan Ray '19 after a quick redirection off of a cross. The Bombers continued to apply pressure as Ray made the first of game-high 12 saves in the fifth minute.
An unlucky bounce off of an EC defender gave Ithaca its second goal in the ninth minute before a barrage of three-straight corners put Elmira down 3-0. Ray was called into action once again in the 24th minute, making a heroic save on a screamer from Elise Leavitt.
Ithaca struck on a cross again in the 34th minute as Jordyn Haynes found Stella Campodonico in the box to put EC down 4-0. Ray stood on her head in net as the half wound to a close as Ithaca was awarded a penalty kick. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts native parried the strike with ease to close the opening period and keep the score at 4-0.
EC weathered a barrage of five shots in the opening five minutes of the second half as the Bombers continued to press the Purple and Gold's backline. Ithaca was able to break through in the 54th minute as Maddie Amidon snuck a shot past Ray.
