Hartwick Tops Men’s Soccer in Saturday Night Tilt

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's soccer team saw its three-game win streak come to an end this evening at the hands of Hartwick College, 2-0. It marked the third win of the season for the Hawks, who improved to 3-10-0 on the year, while the Soaring Eagles dropped to 9-4-2.

Elmira controlled the tempo in tonight's game and held a decisive 17-8 lead in shots, however, shots on goal were much closer at 6-5 in favor of the Purple and Gold. Corner-kick chances were also heavily in favor of the Soaring Eagles, 12-3.

EC applied a great deal of pressure in the first half, as reflected by a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in corner kicks. However, the Elmira offense was contained by the Hartwick defense and goalkeeper, Aidan Wholihan, who made three first-half saves.

The Hawks rode the momentum from their defensive efforts into the halftime break and found the game-opening goal just 53 seconds into the second half. Troy Amegashie won a battle inside the 18-yard box, before slotting it under a diving Xavier Townsend '23 for the tally.

EC upped the pressure from that point on, but the Hawks once again made the most of their chances. Amegashie played the hero for Hartwick, as he capped a long run by tucking the ball into the far post for the insurance goal in the 81st minute. Amegashie's two-goal performance all but sealed a 2-0 win.

Elmira's Townsend finished the contest with a trio of saves, including two in the second half.
