ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's soccer team was tripped up in its home finale on Wednesday afternoon, as the visiting Monarchs of King's College (PA) earned a 4-0 victory over the Purple and Gold.
The result moved EC's record to 9-5-3 overall, while King's improved to 13-4-1 on the season.
The Monarch's played a possession-based style on Campus Field that kept the ball away from the Soaring Eagles' attackers. King's was able to dictate the flow of the match, ending the contest with a 22-5 advantage in shots. Despite the barrage from the Monarchs, Elmira's defense allowed only 11 shots to find their way on target, while
Xavier Townsend '23 and
Giovanni Garufi '22 combined for seven saves in goal.
Alex Showalter did a majority of the damage for the visitors, scoring the game-opening goal in the 20th minute before tallying two more markers off of headed chances as the contest wore on. Elmira looked to have a scoring chance in the 39th minute as
Mark Brado Jr. '22 aimed to make an impact off of the bench. The sophomore laced a shot towards the goal, but the Monarchs' Patrick Hughes smothered the opportunity.
EC's next-best opportunity came in the 67th minute. Rookie
Donovan Sewell '23 charged forward from the left flank and cut in across the edge of the 18-yard box. The Atlanta, Georgia, native ripped off a curling shot that looked destined for the lower-left corner, but Hughes was able to push the shot away from goal.
Despite the Soaring Eagles' best efforts, the Monarchs continued to control the ball as the clock wound down, sealing the victory for the visitors.
