DELHI, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's cross country team took fourth place at the annual Bronco Classic five-kilometer race, hosted by SUNY Delhi at the College Golf Course at Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Although no Red Dragons were among the top-10 runners, SUNY Oneonta managed to edge the Soaring Eagles by one point in the team standings, 77-to-76, for third place. The host Broncos won the meet with 26 points, with their three best runners taking the top-three spots. Hartwick College, a rival member of the Empire 8 Conference, was the only other institution with the minimum number of participants to earn a team score; the Hawks were runners-up with 42 points.
Leading the way for Elmira was the duo of
Emma MacDowell '23 and
Claire Preisch '21 in seventh and eighth place, respectively. MacDowell, who paced the Purple and Gold for a fourth consecutive race, earned her fourth top-10 finish of the season with a new 5K personal record. The freshman completed the loop around the back nine at the golf course in 23:02.70. Presich logged the fourth-quickest 5K of her career, as the junior was clocked at 23:13.90.
Ashley Naples '22 and
Danielle Knapp '23 also finished in back-to-back spots. Naples came in 21st out of the field of 39 competitors with a time of 24:48.80. In 22nd place, Knapp posted a new PR time of 25:13.90.
Gabrielle Stemmer '23 broke her previous 5K record by navigating the course in 26:24.90, which was good enough for 25th place. Two spots behind her was
Mackenzie Becker '23, who narrowly missed a PR time of her own at 28:33.80.
Abby Torres '20 shaved nearly five-and-a-half minutes off of her performance at the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitational, posting a time of 42:49.80 and securing a 39th-place finish.
