PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The No. 3-nationally ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team improved to 2-0-0 (2-0-0 UCHC) on the season Sunday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles dispatched the visiting Monarchs of King's College (Pa.) (0-2-0, 0-2-0 UCHC) by a final score of 6-0 on the ice at the historic Murray Athletic Center.
The Soaring Eagles were dominant once again on Sunday afternoon, ending the game with a 75-5 edge in shots. Elmira showcased its prowess on the power play, as all five goals came with the extra skater. The Soaring Eagles finished the afternoon with a 5-for-9 (.556) mark during power-play chances, while King's was 0-for-5 (.000) over the 60 minutes.
EC dictated the flow of the game from the opening puck drop, as 12 of the Purple and Gold's 31 shots during the first period came with an extra skater on the ice.
Emma Crocker '21 opened the scoring for Elmira, redirecting a shot from the point off the stick of
Sydney Harris '21 for her third marker of the season. As the Soaring Eagles continued to pepper the Monarchs' Emma Zeveney with shots, King's was whistled for body checking with 4:01 left on the clock.
Devyn Gilman '21 made no mistake, powering a rebound shot past Zeveney to give Elmira a 2-0 lead.
Elmira kept up its antics on the power play in the second frame, pouring in a trio of goals with the extra skater on the ice.
Tristen Tolan '21 struck first in the period, burying a chance created by
Eliza Beaudin '22 and
Kiana Melvin '20.
Jess Adams '21 got in on the scoring act with 7:05 left on the clock, potting her first goal of the season off a rebound chance. Beaudin found the back of the net for the second consecutive game to open the season five minutes later. Elmira worked the puck around the outside of King's defensive setup before a one-two-combo of passes from Melvin and Tolan set up Beaudin for a one-timed finish.
Despite registering 23 shots in the third period, Elmira was only able to cash in on one chance in the final 20 minutes of play as Zeveney registered 22 saves. Facing a short-handed situation following a hooking penalty, Gilman managed to carry the puck into the Monarchs' zone. A scrum along the boards led to Gilman firing the puck out to a streaking
Holley Riva '23, who cut across the slot before rifling home her third goal of the young season.
