CORNING, N.Y. -- An early run by the Bears of SUNY Potsdam proved to be the difference on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Corning, New York, as the Elmira College women's lacrosse team was unable to keep pace the visiting Bears in its season opener, falling by a final score of 13-3.
SUNY Potsdam was able to maintain control of the ball for the majority of the contest, as the Bears sent 26 shots on target.
Kacie Pierce '21 stood tall in goal for the Purple and Gold, as the sophomore registered 13 saves. Alli Stark did a majority of the damage for the visitors with a game-high four goals.
A trio of Soaring Eagles found the back of the net as
Mikayla Carfello '22,
Mae Dinh '19 and
Kate Gibson '20 all tallied their first goals of the season.
Carfello got EC on the board with 11:26 on the clock in the opening half, as the freshman rifled a free position shot past Potsdam's Katie Longamore for her first-career tally. Potsdam was able to keep Elmira off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half, as the Bears took an 8-1 lead into the break.
Potsdam's offense continued to surge to open the second half, as the Bears seized a 12-1 lead. Gibson halted the run for EC, as the junior cashed in another free position opportunity. Dinh added her first goal of the year with 2:18 left on the clock, but Potsdam's early scoring was too much to overcome.
