ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Unable to ride the momentum of its first Empire 8 Conference win on Friday, the Elmira College baseball team fell to Houghton College in both games on Saturday, due in large part to a combined seven errors on the afternoon. The Highlanders used a seven-run first inning to capture an 8-2 victory in the opening game. In the nightcap, the Soaring Eagles fell short of a rally and lost by one run, 6-5.
Game One
Unfortunately for Elmira starter
Angus Adams '22, all four errors committed by the Soaring Eagles in the first contest came in the top of the first inning, which extended the frame long enough for Houghton to score seven times.
Corey DeMauro '20 came in out of the bullpen to replace Adams after just one-third of an inning. DeMauro and classmate
Zach Williamson '20 held the Highlanders in check for the rest of the game, allowing just one run on five hits in 6.2 innings. Although the relievers were efficient, EC's offense only produced two runs.
In the fourth down 8-0,
Jansen Crossley '20 got ahold of a 2-1 pitch and lofted it deep to left field, plating
Harrison Zambarano '19 from first to spoil Houghton's shutout bid. Elmira's other run was posted in the sixth, as
Mark Ryan '21 walked on four pitches and scored on a
Jourdan Plaisted '21 RBI base hit.
Griffin Tubbs finished his seven-inning complete game by setting down the EC sit in order in the bottom of the seventh. Tubbs struck out four on 107 pitches while giving up two runs on seven hits.
Game Two
Once again, the Highlanders took advantage of defensive miscues to gain an early lead. In the second, Whitney Cook drove in two with a hit to right field, but an error on the relay allowed the Houghton outfielder to advance to third. Cook then scored on a well-place bunt base hit to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
The Purple and Gold rallied in the fifth. The Soaring Eagles took advantage of sloppy defense by the Highlanders to score four runs and take their first lead of the game. Following an RBI single off the bat of Crossley, Plaisted poked a double to left that drove in two more and gave the Soaring Eagles a 4-3 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Houghton put up a three-spot in the next half inning.
Andy Reed '19 struck out Houghton's David Wessells for the second out of the frame, but issued a free pass on a full count to Jeremy Newswanger, loading the bases for the Highlanders' No. 3 hitter, Ben Closson. Clossen collected two RBIs with a single, which regained the lead for Houghton at 5-4. An insurance run was allowed to sure on the next play, as Reed fielded a ground ball off the bat of Wayne Rode and threw it into foul territory down the right-field line.
Elmira had opportunities in the late going but stranded a total of 12 runners on base in the series finale. The bases were left loaded in the sixth, and although the lead was reduced to one run on Zambarano's RBI grounder in the eighth, the tying run was left on third. In the ninth, Aaron Monroe retired the side in order to complete a four-inning save.
