ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Despite striking first against the Pioneers of Utica College on Saturday afternoon, the Elmira College men's lacrosse team was unable to seize the momentum against its Empire 8 Conference foe, falling by a final score of 20-4 on Class of 2019 Recognition Day.
Prior to today's contest, the Soaring Eagles honored their six members of the Class of 2019 – Cam Brickey '19, John Broyles '19, Mike Chaderjian '19, Matt Marchal '19, Kenny Powell '19 and Peter Prescott '19 – for their dedication and contributions to the program.
Rookie talisman Sam Shaw '22 opened the scoring for the contest with 8:35 on the clock in the first quarter, beating Utica's Harrison Bower. The Pioneers wasted little time, wrenching control of the contest back from the Purple and Gold, as Dakota Allen kick-started a 9-0 run for the visitors that lasted into the second quarter.
Isaac Gottheil '22 halted the barrage with a solo effort with just under three minutes left in the opening half. The Pioneers responded with six unanswered goals before James Mayer '20 combined with Justin Robertson '21 for EC's third goal of the contest early in the fourth quarter. David Keisler '20 buried a feed from Gottheil with 1:30 left in regulation, but Utica's early edge was too much for EC to overcome.
