HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team held a three-goal lead in the first half, but second-half surge by Houghton College proved to be the difference, as the Soaring Eagles fell in the 2019 season finale, 14-7.
After conceding back-to-back goals in the opening 1:34 of the first half, the Soaring Eagles rode the momentum of a five-goal run, one that spanned 13 minutes, to take a 5-2 lead. EC's
Mikayla Carfello '22 ignited Elmira's run with consecutive goals at the 21:47 and 19:05 marks.
Stephanie Martin '22 was credited with an assist on Carfello's second tally.
From there, senior
Macy Huntley '19 gave the Purple and Gold their first lead of the game with a free-position goal at 11:33. Then in a 21-second stretch, EC's
Jena Gatto '20 and Martin scored back-to-back tallies to give Elmira its largest lead of the game, 5-2, at the 8:46 mark.
However, Houghton closed out the first half with four unanswered goals, all by different players, as the Highlanders marched into the halftime break with a slim 6-5 edge on the Elmira women.
Carfello needed just 47 seconds to tie the score at 6-6 in the second half, as the rookie tallied on an assist from Huntley. Houghton's Nina Dorsino reclaimed a one-goal lead for the Highlanders just 51 seconds later, but Carfello netted her fourth goal of the night at the 26:55 mark to knot the score once again at 7-7.
Unfortunately, this was all the offense the Soaring Eagles were able to muster, as the Highlanders closed out the final 23 minutes of action with seven unanswered goals to secure a 14-7 victory.
