ELMIRA, N.Y. -- First-place Ithaca College scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to capture a 4-1 Empire 8 Conference victory over the Elmira College baseball team on a picturesque Sunday afternoon at historic Dunn Field.

Much like the series opener between the Soaring Eagles and Bombers on Saturday, the finale was highlighted by strong performances on the mound from both teams. And like Ithaca's 7-4 win 24 hours ago, its batters produced in the clutch by posting a three-spot in the final inning.

For EC, second-year righty Taber Carter '21 spun a career-high 6.1 innings in his fourth start of the season. He matched Ithaca starter Tyler Hill pitch-for-pitch with six consecutive shutout frames to open the contest. Carter got things going by making quick work of the Bombers in the first, as he caught both lead-off hitter Garrett Callaghan and three-hole slugger Adam Gallagher looking at strike three.

After stranding at least one on base every inning from the second to the sixth, the Bombers were able to score first in the top of the seventh. With Carter beginning to labor, a wild pitch scored Matt Carey from third, after the Ithaca center fielder led off by hitting the first pitch he saw from the Hannibal, New York, native. A full-count walk and a fastball in the dirt put runners on the corners with only one away, but senior lefty Andy Reed '19 kept the deficit at just one by getting Webb Little and Gallagher to line out to the left side of the infield in the next two at-bats.

Following the seventh-inning stretch, Harrison Zambarano '19 knotted the score at 1-all by recording the tying run on a Mark Ryan '21 single. Looking to take the lead, catcher Jack Donnelly '19 opened the eighth with a base hit, but a failed sacrifice bunt and an inning-ending double play thwarted the opportunity.

Reed's relief outing hit a road bump in the top of the ninth. After getting the first two outs, the fourth-year southpaw plunked Webb Little, before surrendering an infield single deep in the hole at short. The next Bomber, Sam Little, plated the go-ahead run with a two-bagger, and Cam Fuoti was credited with two RBIs on a high fly ball to right field that landed inches in front of a diving Jansen Crossley '20.

Hill capped off his remarkable complete game retiring the Elmira side in order in the home half of the ninth. Ithaca's right-hander improved to 4-0 on the season by allowing just one run with five strikeouts on 101 pitches.

News and Notes
  • Brothers Mark Ryan and Mason Ryan '22 led Elmira with two hits apiece on Sunday.
  • Fogarty's hit was the 96th of his collegiate career, as the junior first baseman needs only four more to become the sixth member of EC's 100-hit club.
  • Both Mark Ryan and Fogarty extended their hit streaks to six consecutive games.
  • Carter tossed a career-high 6.1 innings in his fifth career start.
  • Carter also reduced his ERA to a team-low 3.32.
