Controversial Goal Lifts SUNY Delhi Over Women's Soccer in Double Overtime

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A controversial goal at the end of the second overtime period cost the Elmira College women's soccer team Wednesday's non-league match against SUNY Delhi at Campus Field, as the officiating crew allowed what looked to be a shot off of the crossbar to give the Broncos a 4-3 win with 17.5 seconds remaining.

After a late corner kick was returned to Sarah Mojica near the left sideline, the Delhi (2-0-1) midfielder crossed the ball back into the crowded box and found Sam Acuna, who headed the ball high towards the upper right corner of the net. Although it looked as though the ball caromed off of the top bar and back into play, the assistant referee signaled that the ball, in fact, crossed the goal line propelled the Broncos to victory over the Soaring Eagles (0-2-0).

Delhi took an early lead with a pair of first-half tallies, but the resilient Purple and Gold fought back with an impressive second half. Less than four minutes into the second stanza, freshman Taylor Keane '23 deposited her first collegiate goal off of a beautiful over-the-top feed from Hailey Boris '21. As Bronco goalkeeper Jessica Shultis raced off of her line, Keane was able to chip it over her head and into the back of the net to trim the deficit to 2-1.

In the 60th minute, third-year midfielder Zoya Katta '21 fired a deep shot from about 30 yards out with her right foot, beating Shultis high to level the score at 2-all.

SUNY Delhi's Kelsey Innes regained the lead for her team in the 76th minute, as she dribbled her way into the box and through her defender for an open look. The Broncos kept the pressure on the Elmira defense over the next 10 minutes, as they unleashed eight more shots before the Soaring Eagles logged the equalizer.

A hard foul from just outside the 18-yard box drew a yellow card on Delhi's Mojica, setting up a free kick for Boris. The third-year midfielder from Prospect, Connecticut, put a shot on frame, but it bounced through the hands of the keeper, and Keane was there to tap it in to force the extra sessions.
