Women 's Volleyball Suffers Pair of Setbacks to Close Out Granite State Challenge

KEENE, N.H. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team was unable to overcome a pair of tough opponents on Saturday afternoon, as Keene State and Rivier were able to best the Soaring Eagles on the final day of the Granite State Challenge.

Match 1
Elmira (2-6) ran into a strong two-way side in the first match of the day, as the Purple and Gold challenged the host Owls of Keene State (5-2). Keene State came out firing, ending the match with a .250 team hitting percentage. On the opposite side of the ball, the Owls were stellar at keeping EC's attacks from finding the floor, posting 55 digs.

EC struggled in the opener, as Keene State took the opener 25-9. The Soaring Eagles fared better in the second set, flooring 10 kills, but the Owls held on for a 25-17 win. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Purple and Gold were unable to mount a comeback as Keene closed the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.

Sophomore Sam Sprague '22 led the way for the Soaring Eagles, tallying a match-high-tying eight kills while tying for the team lead with nine digs. Lydia Milligan '21 chipped in with five kills, while Jena Gatto '20 added nine digs and a service ace.

Match 2
Elmira fared better in the second match of the day against the Raiders of Rivier (4-3) but was unable to overcome Rivier's three-pronged attack of Sydney Racevicius, Jessica Whyte, and Taylor Dunster. The trio tallied 17, 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

After falling by a 25-19 margin in the opening set, EC battled back to seize the second set, 25-18. Lauren Smith '21 set the tone for the Purple and Gold in the set, as the junior floored seven of her team-high 13 kills during the set. The Soaring Eagles were unable to build upon the momentum shift, however, as Rivier responded by taking the third set 25-10, and the fourth set by a slim 25-21 final score.

Kassi Hastings '21 finished the match with a double-double, tallying 23 assists and 13 digs. Savannah Terry '21 added five kills and a team-leading three blocks.
