NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- A career effort by junior netminder
Elizabeth Hanson '21 backstopped No. 7-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey's defense and helped the Soaring Eagles skate to a 0-0 overtime tie against No. 3-ranked Norwich University on the final day of the 10th Annual East-West Hockey Classic.
The Soaring Eagles (7-2-2) were outshot by the Cadets (10-2-1) by a 12-shot margin, 33-21, which tied for the largest discrepancy of the season for the Elmira women. Thankfully, Elmira's Hanson proved to be up for the challenge, as the Stoughton, Massachusetts, native produced a career-high 33 saves to collect her fourth shutout of the season.
Hanson logged double-digit saves in each of the three periods, including an 11-save effort in the second period. She also made a pair of saves in overtime to preserve the tie, as her record stands at 4-0-1 on the year.
It marked the third time this season Hanson has registered 30-plus saves, all three of which have taken place in her last three starts. With today's performance, Hanson leads the country in goals-against average (0.20), save percentage (99.2%), and is tied for the national lead in shutouts (4).
Offensively, Elmira's best performances occurred in the first and third frames, as the Soaring Eagles produced eight shots in each period. In those periods, Elmira was awarded five power-play chances, two in the first and three in the third, but the Purple and Gold were unable to cash in with the extra skater.
Similarly, Norwich was unable to make the most of three power-play chances.
