PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- In a battle between two of the most storied programs in Division III women's ice hockey history, top-ranked Plattsburgh State got the better of fourth-ranked Elmira College on Friday night, as the Cardinals skated away with a 3-0 victory at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. With the win, Plattsburgh improved to 22-1-0 on the season, while Elmira saw its record dip to 16-3-2.
Â
The Cardinals continued their hot streak and collected their 14th consecutive win of the season, the longest such streak in the country at the moment, while the Soaring Eagles saw their unbeaten streak of 13 games come to a close this evening.
Â
Plattsburgh opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period on a goal from Sarah Wolf. After receiving a pass from Hanna Rose, Wolf skated to the left faceoff circle and barreled towards the net, before snapping a wrist shot into the top-left corner for the game-opening tally.
Â
Wolf doubled the Cardinals' lead at 10:29 with her second tally. A cross-ice pass from Emma Killeen found Wolf at the left faceoff dot, where she took two strides before sniping the top-right corner for the goal.
Â
One of Elmira's best scoring chances of the opening period came at 14:12, when
Emma Crocker '21 led a breakaway chance, but her backhand attempt from just outside the crease was padded away by Plattsburgh's Ashley Davis. The Soaring Eagles would later go on the power play and had a handful of quality looks, but were unable to find the back of the cage, as EC skated into the first intermission in a 2-0 hole.
Â
After a scoreless second period that saw the Cardinals outshoot Elmira, 9-6, Taylor Whitney padded the Plattsburgh lead at 3-0 with a wrap-around goal from behind the net at the 10:21 mark. That goal all but sealed a three-goal win for the defending national champions.
