BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team fell on the road in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon as the Purple and Gold (1-4) were unable to keep pace with the Spartans of D'Youville (2-0), who's two-way play resulted in a 17-3 victory.
D'Youville came flying out of the gates with an aggressive approach that resulted in a 41-12 advantage in shots for the home side. EC's goalkeeping duo of
Alex Cox '23 and
Krystyna Lilland '21 stood tall against the barrage with 19 combined saves. Lilland posted 13 saves in 37:50 of action, while Cox tallied six saves in 22:10.
Rachael Goetz '20 continued her hot start to the 2020 campaign with two goals and five draw controls to lead EC's offense. Rookie
Kendra Heath '23 made her way onto the scoreboard as well with her fourth goal of the season.
Kate Gibson '20 added her first assist of the year to round out EC's point producers.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior
Kayla Cutting '20 amassed a team-best six ground balls and one caused turnover.
After the Spartans scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes, EC responded with 24:00 on the clock. Goetz buried a feed from Gibson to cut into D'Youville's advantage. Two quick goals from the Spartans swung the momentum in the home side's favor, however, as D'Youville took a 4-1 lead with a little over 20 minutes to play. The Purple and Gold's defense regrouped and held D'Youville scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, but the Spartans hit their groove over the remainder of the first half and never relinquished their lead to seal the win.
