YORK, Pa. -- The York College of Pennsylvania swept the Elmira College baseball team in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, with the host Spartans securing wins of 12-5 and 14-5 over the Soaring Eagles.
Corner outfielders
Angus Adams '22 and
Jansen Crossley '20 provided two of the highlights of the afternoon. Not only did the Canadian-born duo pace the Soaring Eagles (2-12) at the plate, both hit home runs in the opening contest against the Spartans (5-4). In the two games combined, Adams and Crossley finished 7-of-13 (.538) with four extra-base hits, five RBIs and three runs scored.
York (Pa.) 12, Elmira 5
Down 5-0 heading into the fifth, EC found new life. With one out, Adams slugged his first collegiate home run to put the Soaring Eagles on the board. Four batters later, Crossley homered, a three-run shot that brought Elmira within one run of the York lead, 5-4.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans drove in five runs of their own – all with two outs – to push their lead to six runs at 10-4.
The Soaring Eagles looked to cook-up some two-out magic of their own in the eighth inning. Hits by
James Delaney '22 and Adams, plus a walk issued to
Sam Plaugher '20, put ducks on the pond for
Jack Volpe '20. A second consecutive walk to Volpe forced home one run, but York reliever Steven Hendrix came in and got the strikeout he needed to avoid a big inning by Elmira.
Adams, who started in left field, led all batters with three hits in the first matchup, as he finished a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Crossley, EC's right fielder, went 1-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs.
York (Pa.) 14, Elmira 5
The second half of Sunday's doubleheader was a pitch-by-committee effort, but the six arms Elmira used surrendered 14 runs on nine hits and 11 walks. Making his first-ever start, freshman
David Kruis '23 (0-1) was handed the loss giving up three runs with one strikeout in 2.0 innings.
Kyle Tubbs '22, EC's most effective pitcher in the nightcap, was not charged with a run and fanned two in one inning out of the bullpen.
Elmira scored the game's first run in the top of the first. After Plaugher walked, Crossley doubled to move both seniors into scoring position.
Tommy Fogarty '20 then drove in Plaugher with an RBI ground out.
The Spartans answered with three runs in the second to take the lead for good. They went on to add four in the third, three in the fourth, and four more in the sixth to take a commanding lead.
Down 7-1, EC posted two runs in the fourth. With two on and nobody out, Adams laced a base hit into center field, and an error on the play allowed Fogarty to score from second base. After Adams and Florio swiped second and third, Florio raced home on a sacrifice bunt from
Jarod Signorelli '23. Errors in the seventh helped the Soaring Eagles to add two more runs to their total. Fielding mistakes by the left side of the York infield and a Crossley hit-by-pitch allowed Elmira load the bases.
Joe Morrone '22 and Adams followed with ground balls in the next two at-bats, both of which earned the sophomores an RBI, but it proved to be too little, too late.
