HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- In its third game of the season, the Elmira College women's soccer team came up short on the road to Houghton College, 3-1. The Soaring Eagles (0-3-0) equalized in the second half but the Highlanders (1-3-0) prevailed with late goals to secure their first win of the year.
Moriah Steffen handed the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute by executing on a penalty kick. Houghton carried its lead into the halftime break with a solid defensive effort. After allowing a shot in the first minute of action, Houghton held EC without an attempt for the remainder of the half.
However, this did little to shake Elmira's confidence, as the Soaring Eagles equalized in the 50
th minute.
After defending a throw in its defensive third,
Lily Kronick '21 cleared the ball out of Elmira's end and it went through Houghton's back line. From there
Taylor Hanson '21 showcased her lightening quick speed.
Hanson raced past the last two defenders, leaving her one-on-one with Houghton goalie Reegan Mitchell. The Houghton keeper stood little chance, as Hanson one-timed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Mitchell and into the side netting for the equalizer.
Tess Schilke broke the 1-1 stalemate in the 61
st minute to give Houghton a one-goal lead. After making an initial save from 20 yards out,
Cassidy Buchman '22 was unable to hang onto the save, as Schilke followed up the rebound and buried it from close range.
Houghton padded its lead in the 79
th minute thanks to a well-placed and perfectly-weighted through ball from Kealy DeForest. Her pass split two EC fullbacks and set Steffan up with a shot from the left side of the box. Steffan curled the shot up, over, and around Buchman for the insurance goal.
The tally from Steffan all but sealed a 3-1 win for the Highlanders.
