Late Runs Lead Houghton Over Baseball in E8 Doubleheader

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Houghton College Highlanders snuck past the Elmira College baseball team in both Empire 8 Conference games on Friday afternoon, earning wins of 2-1 and 12-6.

Houghton 2, Elmira 1
In his first collegiate start, Michael Millross '24 put the Soaring Eagles (3-23, 1-11 E8) in an excellent position to compete with the Highlanders (17-10, 9-7 E8). In 5.1 innings, the freshman from Ottawa, Ontario, struck out a season-high four batters and held Houghton off of the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth, Houghton belted a pair of two-out doubles to pull ahead 2-0. EC had a chance to respond in the following inning. Joe Morrone '22 and Myles Littlejohn '24 hit back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position with a sac bunt. Ryan Newtown, who earned the win on the mound for the Highlanders, shut the door with on the Soaring Eagles by striking out Jacob Parker '24 on three pitches.

Jared Money '22 doubled and scored on a Colin McLaughlin '22 RBI single in the seventh, but the potential game-tying run was erased off the bases before Money's at-bat. Jarod Signorelli '24 led off the frame with a single but was caught stealing second for the first out.

Houghton 12, Elmira 6
EC scored the first run of the contest on a McLaughlin RBI groundout, and the two sides traded one-run leads until the seventh. Up 6-5 at the seventh-inning stretch, the Soaring Eagles allowed a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh, and the Highlanders tacked on three more runs in the eighth.

The critical error that swung momentum in Houghton's favor resulted from Alex Crysler '21 playing out of position. Forced to cover third base when Littlejohn was removed from the game, Crysler, a pitcher, could not field a hopper at the hot corner with two outs. Not only did the go-ahead run score on the play, but the Highlanders took control with a two-run two-bagger in the following at-bat.

Robert Gruber '22 received the loss, but only three of the seven runs the southpaw gave up were earned. Gruber's 6.1 innings are the most he's recorded as a Soaring Eagle, and he tied a career-high with five strikeouts.
