MARCY, N.Y. -- SUNY Poly doubled up the Elmira College men's lacrosse team during Wednesday's non-conference bout with a 12-6 victory against the Soaring Eagles in Marcy, New York.
Five different players earned a point for Elmira (1-3). First-year attackman
Matt Daley '22 recorded the fourth consecutive multi-goal game to start his collegiate career. The Plymouth, Massachusetts, native paced the Soaring Eagles with three goals. Classmate
Brennan Bitely '24 (1g-1a) and junior
Sam Shaw '22 (2a) each had two points for EC.
Sam Crary '23 and
Hayden Sachel '24 added one goal apiece, with Sachel's tally representing the first point of his career.
Senior goalie
Jacob Mattice '21 settled in after the first period. The Canton, New York, product finished with 18 saves, his second-highest total of the 2021 season. Although he did not register a save in the first 15 minutes, he stepped up with seven in the second and fourth quarters.
SUNY Poly (3-0) netted four unanswered to start the first quarter, but Daley and Bitely combined for three in a row in a span of 1:44 to bring the Soaring Eagles within one at 4-3. A five-goal run in the second quarter had the Wildcats ahead 9-3, but the third quarter began favorably for EC. Daley, Crary, and Sachel slashed the Poly lead to 9-6 with three goals in just 2:20, but the hosts kept Elmira off the board for the remaining 25:42 to preserve the victory.
