ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team closed out the 2021 season on a high note, as the Soaring Eagles (5-4) downed Alfred University (1-5) by an 11-4 final score. For the Elmira women, they concluded the year with a 5-4 overall record, EC's first winning season since 2006.
Elmira never trailed at any point of today's contest, much thanks to EC's well-balanced attack and a strong effort between the pipes.
A total of six players produced points for the Elmira women, three of which finished with three. EC's trio of three-point scorers included
Kari Jensen '23 (3g-0a),
Kendra Heath '23 (2g-1a) and
Emily Ferguson '24 (2g-1a). Two of Jensen's three goals were scored on free-position attempts and one of Ferguson's tallies was registered on a free-position shot.
Jensen also led the Soaring Eagles in draw controls with six and chipped in four ground balls. Ferguson added a pair of ground balls and a draw control. Heath scored two goals on just three shots and amassed three ground balls, one draw control, and one caused turnover.
Mikayla Carfello '22 (2g-0a) and
Catrina Dinehart '23 (1g-1a) registered two points apiece, while
Sydney Fendick '24 (1g-0a) finished with one point. Fendick's lone goal came on a free-position attempt and she caused a trio of turnovers.
Krystyna Lilland '21 and
Alex Cox '23 shared goaltending duties on Saturday afternoon. Both netminders finished with three saves apiece in 30 minutes of action. Lilland also led the Soaring Eagles in ground balls, as she collected her first win of the season.
Elmira outscored Alfred, 6-2, in the first half. Jensen scored two of her game-high three goals in the opening 30 minutes of action.
Jensen opened the second stanza with her third goal of the game, but Alfred's Brenna Turner responded with back-to-back goals to pull the Saxons to within three, 7-4.
However, goals from Dinehart, Ferguson, Carfello and Fendick shut the door on an Alfred comeback as the Soaring Eagles marched away with an 11-4 victory.
