HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Hawks took advantage of a trio of errors early on from the Soaring Eagles in the opening set, but
Daniel Miranda's squad would quickly burst to take 12 of the next 13 points in the frame. Elmira extended their lead as
Sam Sprague '22 notched a kill and service ace on back-to-back points before
Samantha Garry '25 added a duo of kills to her stat line. Garry paced the Soaring Eagles, tallying a career-best nine kills on eleven attempts for a hitting percentage of .818.
After trading points, the early lead was too much for the Hawks to handle as EC took the first set 25-13.
The second set played similar to the first, this time as Hilbert last held a lead at 2-1. Elmira put together four stretches in the set where at least four consecutive points favored the Soaring Eagles. Leading 24-7, Hilbert clawed for five straight points before
Sydney Meyers '25 put EC up 2-0 in the match on a kill set up by
Cami Witchley '25.
The third set played the most competitively of the trio, as Hilbert held an 8-7 lead nearing the midway point. After a kill from
Calli Vocke '23 to tie the set, the Purple & Gold never squandered the lead – while finishing the match by scoring seven of the final eight points.
As a team, Elmira posted a hitting percentage of .238 (season-best) while holding the Hawks to -.140. Meyers and
Delaney Johnson '23 each posted three kills, while Witchley led the way in the assist category with twelve.
