ALFRED, N.Y. – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team dropped a 71-51 decision on Tuesday night against Alfred in an Empire 8 conference matchup despite receiving a career-high 17 points from
Nevaeh Winston '25.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Alfred would capitalize on Elmira's miscues in the opening quarter of action as the Saxons forced the Soaring Eagles into 10 turnovers.
Alyssa Waters '22 connected on a 3-pointer for the Purple & Gold at the 7:56 mark to trim the deficit to 6-5 before Alfred answered with a 15-0 run.
Despite trailing by as many as 19 points in the frame, the Soaring Eagles closed on a 5-2 run over the final 3:28 of action. Winston,
Alicia Johnson '22, and
Taylor Albrecht '22 would be responsible for the scoring as Winston and Johnson both hit shots, while Albrecht went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe.
Winston would catch fire for the Soaring Eagles in the second quarter as she accounted for nine of Elmira's 12 points. She connected on each of her three shots from the field while hitting 3-of-4 shots from the free-throw line. Elmira worked to trim the deficit to 14 points before a run from the Saxons stretch their lead to 48-24 heading into halftime.
The Soaring Eagles looked to build momentum in the third quarter as EC outscored Alfred 14-5. Winston, Albrecht, and
Desiree Roy '25 provided the scoring for Elmira as Albrecht tallied six points. A 6-0 run to open the second half allowed the Soaring Eagles to trim the deficit to 48-30 following a jumper by Winston at the 6:34 mark. Elmira cut the deficit to 52-38 with 2:20 left in the quarter after Roy hit a jumper in the paint.
Roy would try her best to get the Soaring Eagles back into the contest in the fourth quarter as she registered seven points to go along with five rebounds. The Soaring Eagles worked to cut the deficit to as few as 13 points before the Saxons found their stride to put the contest away down the stretch.
D'Asia Jones '25 contributed four points and a pair of boards off the bench for the Purple & Gold, while Winston hit a pair of shots at the charity stripe.
Elmira finished the contest 18-of-59 from the field and 14-of-23 at the charity stripe, while Alfred went 24-of-74 from the field and 11-of-39 from downtown. Winston paced all scorers with her 17 points while setting career-highs in field goals made (6) and free throws made (5). Albrecht and Roy each finished with 11 points, while Roy added a team-high nine rebounds.
