Strong Defensive Effort Falls Short for Soaring Eagles Against Hartwick

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The Elmira College field hockey program returned home for an Empire 8 Conference matchup on Saturday at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles dropped a 6-0 decision to the Hawks, who improved to 5-0 in the conference this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Hawks would bring heavy offensive pressure early in the contest as they would take a total of 11 shots in the first quarter. Elmira goalkeeper MeganRae Burke '24 turned away each of the five Hartwick shots that were put on frame in the quarter. The Soaring Eagles battled in the middle of the field and would allow only one penalty corner to the Hawks the frame.

In the second quarter of action, Hartwick would take a 1-0 lead at the 15:51 mark as a shot from the top of the circle would beat Burke. The Hawks would make it 2-0 with a tally at the 18:46 mark of the frame before adding another goal at the 24:58 mark to make it 3-0. Later in the frame, Elmira would be awarded a penalty corner after taking the ball deep into the circle against the Hawks. Victoria Davis '24 would get an offensive opportunity off of the corner but would have her shot just go wide of the cage.

Burke continued to stand tall for the Purple & Gold in the third quarter as she would turn away six shots on cage taken by the Hawks. Hartwick added to its lead at the 36:09 mark of the frame as the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke that would be successfully converted to make it 4-0. A tally by the Hawks at the 42:38 mark of the frame would make it 5-0, while the scoring would be rounded out by Hartwick at the 52:45 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 6-0.

Burke finished the contest with 19 saves for the Soaring Eagles and increased her overall total to 134 on the season. Burke also moved into sole possession of seventh place for career saves after passing former EC goalkeeper Mikayla Rebusmen '17.

UP NEXT:
The Purple & Gold return to action with a home contest against Empire 8 foe Keuka on October 12 beginning at 3:30 P.M. The Soaring Eagles then hit the road for a non-conference matchup on October 15 against the Wells College Express beginning at 10:15 A.M.
