Soaring Eagles Fall to Cardinals in Empire 8 Semifinals on Friday Evening

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball team would have its season come to an end on Friday evening, falling to the Cardinals from St. John Fisher University 67-41 In the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Tournament. The Soaring Eagles, who held its own through the first half, were outmatched in the final two frames as turnovers would be the difference in the contest. 

The duo of Nevaeh Winston '25 and Laura Bogota '25 would lead the Purple & Gold in scoring, posting 15 and nine points, respectively.

After the Cardinals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the Soaring Eagles would settle in and battle the hosts through the remaining seven minutes of the opening quarter. Desiree Roy '25 would score the final bucket of the quarter, with the Soaring Eagles trailing by just a pair heading into the second, 14-12. 

In the second, Fisher would outscore Elmira by ten, as the Purple & Gold were able to shoot just 3-of-15 from the field. Early foul trouble for Roy would force the forward to the bench, but Elmira would hold strong to trail by just a dozen at the break, 31-19. 

In the third, the Soaring Eagles would be outscored by ten once again, as nine turnovers hindered Elmira's ability to get the ball to the basket. Fisher would use 11 points off turnovers in the frame compared to just four for the Soaring Eagles as it extended its lead to 22 heading into the fourth. 

In the final frame, the Soaring Eagles were able to outscore the opposition through the first seven minutes of the period, holding the Cardinals to just 4-of-11 shooting as the game wound to a close with the hosts eventually winning, 67-41

Unlike its two meetings during the regular season, Elmira would control the offensive glass, out-rebounding Fisher 15-11 Offensively, paced by Roy and Winston with four a piece.
