Soaring Eagles Take Pair from Broncos on Monday Afternoon as Offense Shines

DELHI, N.Y. – The Elmira College Softball team picked up its third doubleheader sweep of the season on Monday afternoon, downing the Broncos from SUNY Delhi in both contests, 11-3 and 8-5, respectively. After game one was tied 3-3 heading into the third, the Soaring Eagles would score eight unanswered runs as the contest ended in five innings, before a 8-0 lead in game two propelled the away team to victory.

For the games, the Soaring Eagles would record 26 hits, while Katie Distefano '24, Kaitlyn Belmont '24, Jill Cortez '23, and Hannah Flagg '24 each recorded four hits a piece, including a home run from Cortez. Additionally, the Soaring Eagles would steal eight bases on the afternoon, while Maryann Sobel '25 and Madison Lodowski '26 picked up wins in game one and two, respectively, with Cortez earning her second save of the season in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE:

  • After a scoreless first on both sides, the Soaring Eagles would go to work in the second where they scored a trio of runs. In the frame, EC recorded six hits which consisted of four singles, and a pair of doubles from Cortez & Distefano, who recorded a pair of RBI. 
  • In the bottom half, the Broncos would record three against Elmira starting pitcher Madison Lodowski, recording just two hits in the inning but utilizing a pair of walks. 
  • In the third, Elmira would score four runs on four hits, including a leadoff triple by Amelia Martin '24 which she would then score on an errant throw. 
  • Lodowski's day would come to a close after the second, as Sobel would come on in relief. Lodwowski went 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while walking three.
  • Elmira would increase its lead to five in the fourth inning after Belmont led off the frame with a leadoff triple, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Madison Brown-Bloom '23. 
  • In the fifth, Elmira would put the game out of reach when scoring three runs before the eventual run-rule. In the frame, the Soaring Eagles would record three hits, including RBI knocks from Asia Curkendall '25 and Belmont. 
  • Sobel would pitch the final three innings of play, going perfect over the span where she struck out one Bronco to pick up the victory on the mound. 
  • Combined, EC went on to record 16 hits, led by DeAmelia with three. Six others recorded a pair of hits, while Distefano drove in three runs.

GAME TWO:

  • The Soaring Eagles would pick up where they left off in game one, scoring eight unanswered runs over the first three innings to give Elmira starting pitcher Madison Lodowski '25 some early breathing room. 
  • In the first, Elmira would score three runs on three hits, while using a Bronco error to its advantage. In the frame, Belmont and Brown-Bloom would each record RBI hits.
  • In the second, it was much of the same for EC, scoring three runs on three hits, while Belmont and Martin each recorded RBI hits, with Belmont's being a pair. 
  • In the third, EC would extend its lead to seven after Jill Cortez '23 homered to lead off the frame. 
  • After a quiet fourth, Elmira would add its eighth run of the afternoon on a fielder's choice with DeAmelia at the plate, scoring Jasmine Johnson '26. 
  • Over the next three innings, the Broncos would make things interesting as they scored five runs, with Lodowski's afternoon ending in the seventh after a pair of leadoff hits. Cortez would come on in relief and work out of the jam following a pair of runs from the Broncos, picking up her second save of the season in one inning of work as she would allow no runs on two hits while striking out two.
  • Lodowski's final line would be 6.0 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits, while walking one and striking out two.

Elmira will return to the field tomorrow afternoon when taking on Marywood in another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch at the Holding Point Recreation Complex in game one is set for 3:00 PM.
