Soaring Eagles Split with Highlanders on Wednesday Afternoon

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College softball team split its Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with the Highlanders from Houghton University. After falling behind 6-0 through two and a half innings in game one, Elmira would see a four-run fifth inning before walking it off with a pair of runs in the seventh. Game two would prove to be a bit more of a defensive battle, as the Soaring Eagles found themselves ahead 2-1 before a seventh inning run for the Highlanders pushed the game to extras, and eventually pushed across four runs in the tenth to secure victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles found themselves in a quick hole after the first inning as the Highlanders were able to plate a run following an infield single from Jennifer Page. 
  • Elmira and Houghton would both see quiet second innings on the offensive side, before Houghton was able to extend its lead to six runs in the third against Soaring Eagle starting pitcher Maryann Sobel '25. In the frame, the Highlanders produced five runs on six hits, which eventually lifted Sobel from the game. Cadey Wheat '27 would come in in relief, allowing an RBI single before getting Carlee Miller to groundout. 
  • The Soaring Eagles would answer back with a pair in the bottom of the third, as Brianna Ramstine '27 singled to open the top of the first. From there, an RBI double from Kaitlyn Belmont '24 scored Ramstine to trim the EC deficit to 6-1. With two outs, Madison Brown-Bloom '24 would beat out an infield single, which scored Belmont to bring EC within four runs. 
  • In the fourth, the Highlanders would plate another after using two hits, extending its lead to 7-2. 
  • After a quiet bottom of the fourth for Elmira, Kendall McAnelly '27 would come on in relief of Wheat, who finished the afternoon tossing 1.1 innings, where she allowed one run on three hits, while walking two.
  • In the fifth, Elmira would see four runs on four hits, including a three-run inside the park home run from Hannah Colwill '27. Prior to, Ramstine (who doubled to open the inning) would be brought home by Jocelyn Jean '27 on an RBI single. 
  • After a scoreless sixth on both sides, Elmira would work magic in the seventh. After Asia Curkendall '25 walked and stole second to begin the inning, Colwill would single up the middle before Curkendall would be thrown out at the plate. After advancing to second on the throw, a pinch-hit single from Shelby Dawe '27 brought home Colwill to tie the game at 7-7. Following a walk from Olivia Roccabruna '27, Ramstine would bring home the game-winner on a single to centerfield, scoring Dawe. 
  • In game two, the contest would remain scoreless through two and a half innings. With one out, Justice Green '24 and Ramstine recorded back-to-back singles to put a pair in scoring position, before an RBI groundout from Belmont put the Soaring Eagles ahead 1-0. 
  • The Highlanders would answer back in the top of the fourth against Elmira starting pitcher Kendall McAnelly, scratching a run on a pair of hits, as Chyanne Bushyhead singled home Jennifer Page, who singled earlier in the inning to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Colwill would continue to keep her good fortunes intact, tripling home Curkendall with one out, who singled and stole second earlier in the frame to put Elmira ahead 2-1. 
  • The two teams would remain quiet on the offensive side, as McAnelly continued to deal inside the circle. In the top of the seventh, the Highlanders would push across another run with two away, using an RBI triple to tie the contest at 2-2. 
  • After a scoreless top of the seventh for McAnelly, Ramstine would single to open the inning before advancing to second on a stolen base. After an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt, Katie Distefano '24 would single to put runners on the corners, but the Highlanders would retire two straight to send the game to the ninth. 
  • Following the eighth inning, McAnelly's afternoon would come to an end after allowing two runs on ten hits while striking out four. Maddy Ward '27 would come on in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth before Dawe came on to pitch the tenth. 
  • With a runner being placed on second to begin the 10th, the Highlanders would eventually find themselves with the bases loaded, eventually pushing four runs across to take a 6-2 victory. 
  • In the bottom of the tenth, Ramstine would double home a run to begin the frame, before Distefano brought home another on an RBI groundout and Houghton picked up a 6-4 victory. 

UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles return to the field on Saturday when heading to Russell Sage for its final Empire 8 regular season contests of the 2024 campaign, where they will look to clinch a berth in the Empire 8 Tournament with a victory.
