HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball team hosted the Wolves of Keuka College for a Tuesday afternoon conference matchup at the Holding Point Recreation Center. The Soaring Eagles battled hard but fell short in extra innings, 9-8.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Wolves struck first in this one, scoring three runs in the top of the first before the Soaring Eagles had a chance to bat. The Wolves threatened with a runner on second and two outs in the second, but a strikeout from
Devin Sullivan ended the inning.
Brady Buttice gave some momentum to EC in the second by walking and moving to second on a fielder's choice.
Bobby Cavalier came up clutch with a two out single to center field, bringing Buttice into score and cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Wolves answered back with a two-run homer in the top of the third to take a 5-1 advantage. Keuka continued to add in the top of the fourth by scoring another run and pushing themselves in front 6-1. Buttice picked up an infield single with two outs in the fourth, and it was immediately followed by a first pitch double from
Michael Currao. The double brough Buttice into score and pulled the Soaring Eagles within four runs.
Nate Lowry worked a clean fifth inning on the mound that included a strikeout.
Alex Dinicola ripped a one out single up the middle to get Elmira started in the fifth.
Kaden Bolt followed by lining a single to left field. Dinicola raced towards third on the single and came into score when an error was made by the left fielder on the play. Two batters later,
Xander Canfield sent a single out to right field, bringing Bolt around to score and cutting the Keuka advantage to 6-4. The Wolves threatened again with a runner in scoring position the next inning, but a diving play at second by Dinicola would keep them off the scoreboard.
Jaydn Wagner got hit by the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh to give EC a base runner. Two batters later, Bolt picked up an infield single to move runners to first and second.
CJ Wheaton followed up by grounding a single to right field, loading up the bases with Soaring Eagles. Canfield hit a sacrifice fly to center field on the first pitch to cut the deficit to 6-5. The next pitch was a wild pitch as Bolt scrambled into score from third base to tie up the game at six. After an intentional walk to
Connor Stone, Buttice sent the first pitch off the center field wall on a hop, Wheaton and Stone came across to score and give EC their first advantage of the game, 8-6. The Wolves responded with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie up the ball game.
Nicholas Miller worked his way through the ninth, keeping the game tied heading into the bottom of the inning. The Soaring Eagles could not push any runs across as the game went to extra innings. The Wolves broke the tie in the tenth, scoring a run and moving ahead into the bottom of the inning. Elmira was unable to score anything in the bottom of the inning and dropped this one, 9-8.
LEADERS
Offensively, Buttice led the way, going 2-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Bolt went 2-5 at the dish, tallying two runs scored and one RBI. Stone recorded a hit in three at-bats, while scoring a run.
