In Elmira’s season-opener against Neumann University on Friday night, Sumi showcased his talents in a very positive light by totaling three points on one goal and two assists against the Knights. Sumi’s three-point effort marked the first time an EC skater has totaled three points in a season-opening game since former standout John Clewlow ’12 tallied three in 2008. All three of Sumi’s points were registered at several key moments throughout the game.
 
Sumi’s first point of the night came on an assist during the second period, when teammate Jeremy Marginsky ’18 scored a go-ahead goal late in the period to put EC ahead 4-3. Sumi then assisted on another Elmira tally early in the third period, when he connected with Marginsky once more to reclaim a 5-4 lead.
 
Neumann would once again tie the game at 5-5 in the third period on a power-play goal but Sumi once again rose to the occasion. While on the penalty kill, Sumi received a pass in the neutral zone before skating just inside the blue line and firing a scorcher of a slap shot that caromed off the inside left post and into the back of the cage for the go-ahead score.
