Meghan Fonfara '18 recorded a hat trick on Friday in the 5-1 victory over SUNY Cortland for the No. 3-ranked EC women's ice hockey team. It marks the first hat trick of the season and the first for the Soaring Eagles since Cassidy Delainey '15 did so on February 7, 2015 against Buffalo State.

The second-year forward scored all three of her goals in the second period. It was the first time a Soaring Eagle had scored thrice in a single period since January 29, 2011, in an 11-1 win over Chatham University.

Fonfara put Elmira up 2-0 with a top-shelf goal over the glove of Red Dragons goalie Deanna Meunier only 1:09 into the second period. At the 12:04 mark, she made a nifty move to beat Cortland's Nadine de Nijs for a one-on-one opportunity with Meunier, this time beating the netminder stick-side for an unassisted tally.

The Elma, NY, native netted her third goal on the power play. She took a feed from Kristin Chivers '19 from the point and back-handed the puck inside the near post to give the Soaring Eagles a 4-1 advantage.

On the season, Fonfara leads the Purple and Gold and is tied for third in the ECAC West Conference with five goals.

The EC women's ice hockey team will play the first half of a home-and-home series against Utica College at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, November 21st, at 3:00 p.m.
