Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team led at the break, but couldn't quite make a comeback late as it fell 54-47 to visiting St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Saints to 3-3, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-7.
The first half proved to be a game of runs as EC got off to a sizzling start, making four of its first five attempts from downtown to take a 17-9 lead just over six minutes in. Over the next eight minutes the Saints responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead at 18-17 with six minutes remaining in the opening half. The Purple and Gold closed the half on a 9-4 run to take a 26-22 advantage into the break.
St. Lawrence used an 8-0 spurt out of halftime to take a 30-26 advantage that it would not relinquish the remainder of the game. However, EC was in contention for the upset victory throughout. The Saints led by as many as nine with just under five minutes remaining. The Soaring Eagles proved resilient narrowing the deficit to four after two Zak Kumor '14 (Newton, PA -- Pennsbury) free throws with 2:43 remaining, as EC trailed just 51-47. The Purple and Gold were unable to score in the final two and a half minutes of play as St. Lawrence held on for a tight 54-47 victory.
Josh Keys '14 (Bel Air, MD -- CM Wright) led all players with 22 points, including four treys and added a team-high seven boards. Derrick Vogel '14 (Bel Air, MD -- CM Wright) and Kurt Dutcher '14 (Gaylord, MI -- Gaylord) chipped in seven points apiece, while Vogel proved to be an offensive catalyst tallying eight assists. Ralph Temgoua led the Saints with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Garrett Sharlow who eclipsed the 1,000 career point plateau in the game finished with 14 points and six boards.
Elmira returns to action tomorrow when they host Clarkson in a doubleheader, with the women tipping off at 3:00 p.m. and the men at 5:00 p.m.
