Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the second period as they downed Fredonia 4-1 Saturday evening at the Murray Athletics Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 7-3-0 overall, while the loss drops the Blue Devils to 4-5-3.
The two teams played to a scoreless first period, but EC erupted early in the second period 1ess than three minutes in when
Colin Hoey '13 (Doylestown, PA -- New England Huskies) fed a pass to
Martin Lee '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) who played it to
Brock Sawyer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Powell River Kings) at the point.
Sawyer nailed a shot that got through the defenders in front of net and somehow found its way through the five-hole of Fredonia goaltender Jeff Holloway.
The Blue Devils responded on the power play at the 7:42 mark when Stephen Castriota scored on a rebound off a shot from Bryan Ross. The Purple and Gold didn't take long to regain momentum, as they killed off another penalty and then scored off a counterattack.
Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto Ontario -- North York Rangers) fed the puck up the board to
Lee. He carried the puck into the zone 2-on-1 with
Brendan Sanders (Mississauga, ONT – Vaughan Vipers). Lee fed
Sanders who deked Holloway and beat him to the glove side. EC scored again one minute later when
Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) fed
Willer in the middle of the zone who played it back to
Michael Kirby '12 (Delta, BC -- Melford Mustangs) who one-timed it home for a 3-1 Elmira lead. The Soaring Eagles continued their second period dominance at the 15:56 mark when they scored their third unanswered, this time short-handed.
Willer took the puck down the ice and fed a streaking
Sawyer who beat Holloway glove side again. This prompted a goaltender change for the Blue Devils.
The game remained scoreless the rest of the way as the EC defense tightened to hold off any chance of a comeback bid for Fredonia.
Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders) stopped 23 shots in net for Elmira, while Holloway and Mark Friesen combined to make 35 saves for the Blue Devils. The Purple and Gold return to action Friday when they travel to face non-conference opponent SUNY Brockport.
