Collins Overtime Goal Lifts Men’s Hockey Past Neumann

Pine Valley, NY – A Michael Collins '16 goal 1:55 into the overtime period lifted the Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team over visiting Neumann University 3-2 Friday evening at the Murray Athletics Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 1-1, while the loss drops the Knights to 0-1.
 
Elmira got on the board just over two minutes in to the first period when Liam Burt '16 fired a shot past Nuemann netminder Ben Curley. Greg Whittle '16 and Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 were credited with assists on the play. Three minutes later the Purple and Gold added a power-play marker. D'Arcy Oakes '13  played the puck to Erik Eriksson '16 at the high slot where he rifled a shot toward net that was tipped out in front off the stick of Whittle into the back of the net The Soaring Eagles held a 14-9 shots advantage as they took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
 
The momentum shifted in the second period as the Knights climbed back into the game. At the 6:34 mark of the period Steve Gervais tallied a score off assists from Dave Dervais and Mikko Virtanen. With just over a minute remaining in the frame Neumann's Craig Cowie recorded an unassisted marker to tie the game at 2-2. The Knights controlled the second period outshooting Elmira 12-4, as the teams were tied after 40 minutes.
 
The third period was a back-and-forth affair as both teams looked for the go-ahead goal. The defenses and goaltenders stepped up as neither team could find the back of the net sending the game into overtime. The Soaring Eagles held a slight 10-9 advantage in shots in the third stanza.
 
Just less than three minutes into the overtime period Josh Burnell '15 took the puck behind the net and fed Jesper Strale '14 just inside the right faceoff circle. Strale fired an initial shot on net that was saved by Curley. The rebound kicked out in front to Collins who found the top shelf in the left corner for the victory.
 
Elmira went 1-for-5 on the power play in the contest, while the Knights were 0-for-5 with the extra skater. Ryan deMelo '15 stopped 21 shots in net for Elmira, while Curley made 21 saves for Neumann.
 
The two teams return to the ice Saturday for their second game in two nights at the Murray Athletic Center starting at 7:00 p.m.
