Men’s Hockey Records Nine Goals to Prevail over Morrisville State

Pine Valley, NY – The EC Men's Hockey team recorded a season high of nine goals in a 9-4 victory over Morrisville State College Saturday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles improve to 7-9-0 overall, while the Mustangs fall to 1-14-2 on the season.  

In the opening period EC controlled the tempo converting on its first power play opportunity when Michael Collins '16 crossed it to Liam Burtt '16 who passed it up to Tommy Sumi '16 for the opening score. At the 18:49 mark Morrisville tied it up when Dalton Gilbert found the back of the net on a slap shot. Assisting on the play were James Jarvis and Jamie Nelson. However, EC was able to take the lead with 42 seconds left in the period when D'Arcy Oakes '13 passed it up to Andrew Ciampichini '15 and Josh Burnell '15 on a breakaway. Ciampichini skated down the ice with the puck and at the last second passed it to Burnell who put it in the back of the net.

In the second period things became very interesting as EC converted on three straight goals. At the 3:34 mark of the period Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 put into the back of the net on a power play opportunity with Eric David '15 and Collins assisting on the goal. 30 seconds later Burnell passed it up to Ciampichini who lit the lamp to give EC a 4-1 lead. Less than 20 seconds later on another power play opportunity Collins found his classmate Greg Whittle '16 who put it past Morrisville goaltender Chris Azzano. After a Morrisville goaltender change, the Mustangs were able to respond with its second goal of the game at the 7:22 mark when Anthony Scornaienchi found the back of the goal. Assisting on the play were Ryan Marcuz and Nelson. However, the Soaring Eagles were able to extend its lead to 6-2 at the 13:36 mark when Carter Shinkaruk '16 put it into the back of the net.

In the final period the Mustangs looked to cut down the Soaring Eagles lead by scoring at the 6:57 and 9:44 marks on their power plays. Although Morrisville narrowed the lead down to two scores, EC was able to respond with three unanswered goals to end the game. Collins was able to score two of the last three goals at the 11:01 and 13:34 marks, while Nick Angelo '16 recorded his first goal of the season at the 12:26 mark.

Ryan deMelo '15 earned another win for EC recording 30 saves in net. Christopher Azzano, Jakob Rasmussen and Zac McMichael split time in net for Morrisville. Azzano started for nearly the first 25 minutes making 12 saves, Rasmussen came in for the next 29 minutes making seven saves, and McMichael finished in net.   

The EC Men's Hockey team will return to action next Thursday, January 17 when it travels to Nazareth College in an ECAC West showdown. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
